Our drilling rigs are equipped to the highest safety standards with full LOLER and PUWER certification as well as emergency safety systems and are ready to mobilise to any location in the UK as and when required.

Rotary drilling

We have a fleet of rotary rigs which are able to tackle a range of rotary drilling requirements from drilling 200m geothermal wells and water wells, mineral investigations and quarry development investigations down to our small Sedidrill 90 which is capable of accessing through limited width areas of less than 1m.

Our rigs are able to drill and undertake conventional and triple tube coring at varying sizes using air, water, polymer and mud flush drilling methods. Additionally we operate Geobor ‘S’ wireline coring system enabling high quality cost effective production of rock core as well as recovery of Class 1 samples from cohesive superficial soils, in appropriate ground conditions.

Our crews are experienced in the investigation of underground disused mineral workings and mine shafts, de-watering wells, quarry development, drilling and installation of geothermal and water extractions boreholes as well as nearshore over water drilling.

Cable Percussion

Cable percussion is the most common drilling technique used in site investigation in the UK. Here at Phoenix Drilling our fleet of cable percussive rigs are made up of Dando 4000, 2000 ,150’s and Edeco-Pilcon 2000. All cable percussion rigs are towed into position by a Land Rover site support vehicle and therefore require adequate headroom and clear level space in which to move, set up and operate.

The cable percussion technique allows the borehole to be supported by the insertion of steel casing to prevent loose soils collapsing. This enables depths of up to 70m to be reached depending on ground conditions and casing diameters.

A clay cutter and shell are used to advance the borehole to required depths through cohesive and granular materials and also allow recovery of disturbed soil samples providing a representation of geological strata. The recovery of undisturbed samples is also available in cohesive strata by driving a 100mm hollow tube into the ground and extracting. Sample recovery allows for examination and laboratory analysis.

Hydraulic Percussion

Our hydraulic percussive rigs are the smallest in our fleet. This drilling method is particularly suited to restricted access sites, contamination investigations, and where disturbance must be kept to a minimum.

This extremely compact rubber tracked rig is easily transported and manoeuvred and can reach depths of up to 12.00m depending on ground conditions making this a popular cost effective drilling technique within the industry.

Soils samples are recovered in 1.00m long tubes which are driven into the ground using a drop weight and rods. Upon reaching the required depths, the plastic tube liners and rod are extracted using a hydraulic jack. The undisturbed soil sample is retained in the liner for engineer examination or laboratory analysis.

Borehole installations

Borehole installations including piezometers, gas and water monitoring standpipes, inclinometers and extensometers. Regular monitoring visits to record gas compositions and sample water chemistry are also available as required.

Sampling and in situ testing rock and soil in accordance with BS5930 and BS1377.
